Swiss Open 2021: Pranav Jerry-Sikki Reddy, Satwik-Ashwini Begin Their Campaign Today

Indian mixed doubles pairs of Pranaav Jerry Chopra/N Sikki Reddy and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Ashwini Ponnappa begin their campaign at the Swiss Open 2021 today. While Pranav and Sikki will face Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith of England, Satwik and Ashwini will take on Hafiz Faizal and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja of Indonesia.

Pranav and Sikki Reddy are ranked 32nd in the world by BWF and they will have a task at hand when they take on ninth-ranked Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith.  These two pairs have never faced each other. The English pair is on a three-match losing streak while for the Indian pair, this will be their first match of 2021. Pranav and Jerry played their last match together in the All England Open last year, where they lost to ZHENG Si Wei and HUANG Ya Qiong of China.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa ranked 19, after their impressive performance in the Thailand Open where they lost in the semifinals, will be up against eighth-ranked pair Hafiz Faizal and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja of Indonesia. The Indonesian pair last played in World Tour Finals last year where they ended their campaign with a loss against GOH Soon Huat and LAI Shevon Jemie of Malaysia.

In the singles category, after a disappointing run during the two Thailand Opens and BWF World Tour Finals in Bangkok last month, Indian badminton players will look to hit form at Basel to make a final charge for Tokyo qualification. The Indian squad will be spearheaded by the likes of PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal, who are placed in the bottom half of the women’s singles draw. This means a highly awaited all-Indian semi-final between the two Olympic medalists is a possibility.
